Old Man Scranton
(Steve Wright)
A twenty foot cape and sou’wester, an Atlantic the foundry made
Rubber boots, hand line, and jigger; his beard all grizzled and gray
He stands in the stern like a statue, through the dawns mist he’ll make his way
Woolen mitts on the stick now he’ll guide her through the channel and out in the bay
Gone fishing out in the bay
I remember when he’d come up dock side with crate full of twenty pound cod
He’d trade it for flour and sugar and a tin pail of maple leaf lard
He’d buy only the things that they needed, caned milk wooden matches and tea
But before he’d crank on the flywheel for home he’d buy peppermint candy for she
She always liked peppermint candy

Oh, the memory of old man Scranton, last of the dying way
Oh the memory of old man Scranton a treasure I still hold today
The harbour has changed for the better some say with the jet ski and catamaran
Old fishing boats once on the water, were hauled up to rot on the land
The hand line and old sou’wester, well the tourists now dig from the sand
But the sound of the make and break engine remains only in the memory of man
Man remember that make and break engine
(CH)
So come to the harbour at first mourning light while the town is still quiet from sleep
The mystical mist on the water will quiet your mind and retreat
To a time when old man Scranton took a living and kept his soul free
You’ll find treasures to last you forever with your life tied fast to the sea
Tie your life line fast to the sea
