Steve Wright: Music

The Best We Can Do

(Steve Wright)
There’s a wino on the corner, he’s sitting staring off in time.
To a time when he was somebody, before that long fall to the wine
The game was king of the mountain, and he climbed his way up to the top
But the devil in the bottle, brought that screaming to a stop
A bag lady feeds the pigeons on that little bit of grass down town
She’s thinking about her babies back before they all had grown
Back before they left her and tore her world apart
Now she eats one crumb for her body and scatters two more for her heart
(CH)
Just another face in a lonely place, reality gone blind
Another small donation of goodwill at Christmas time
I don’t know how this happens in our land of liberty
But it scares me to death, to think this is the best
We can do, for people in need
There’s a street kid in the alley hiding out away from harm
Cold alone and hungry, infected needle tracks in her arms
Her momma had too many boyfriends who abused her body and her mind
Well they had their way, and now she will stay bruised and beaten by that world outside
(CH)
