Steve Wright - singer / songwriter
Growing up around Chedabucto Bay, Steve Wright became one with the stories, and culture that developed in the fog, wind and waves. Enjoying continued exposure at the Stanfest he is excited this year to release his third collection. “Another Trip Around The Bay”. Hot off the press, this recording promises to be as riveting and passionate as his first “Life Around The Bay”.
His musical story telling captures, from the pages of history forgotten truths that have hard and poignant relevance still today. In his unpretentious laid back style he takes you into the kitchen of Grammy Shea, a Silver Cross Mother who found her way of dealing with the loss of her sons to war; then along the shores of Chedabucto Bay, where many hoped and dreamed of better times Waiting For The Smack; and then back to the settlement days when Lydia, a freed slave found herself once again tricked into servitude and beaten until her only recourse was to escape upon a ship bound for Africa. These are stories from our past which he writes and sings, and these triumphs and tragedies are the glue that binds our communities today.
His first collection “Life Around The Bay” done in a traditional folk style, relives history through those stories of the people who lived around the bay. Songs like Touch Not The Cat, She Waits Alone, and Skipper Jim, grab the hearts and imaginations of all who hear them, reliving the emotions and conviction to survive in the face of tragedy.
Steve’s second recording “Bottom Line” a folk/rock collection continues to tell the stories of our people. Shoulder To Shoulder was inspired and written for the people of Canso as they struggled to save their town. Cost of Love speaks of homelessness and how others profit from their situation. Hard edged stories in a harder edged folk rock style.
